First Time competing - 4 week prior
Higher intensity rolls, increase volume/ practice cardio by running, rowing, hiking and biking, any form of cardio as long as you're increasing the intensity where improvement can be seen.
Train more than usual, drill techniques, and plan what you want to focus on in training, writing this down can help, on your notes or in a notebook.
When preparing for a competition, protein and carbs must increase; food such as chicken, beef, and fish are great protein sources. Rice, and wholegrain foods, i.e. pasta bread, are good examples of carbs.
Mental preparation is vital, especially for your first time, a great way to tackle competition anxiety is by visualization; this can be done off and on the mats by imagining what you will first do when standing up across your opponent; this can be great while drilling also.
Take downs are neglected heavily in your first competition prep, investing your time in drilling and learning new easy take downs, which can be found on our Instagram page linked in the menu bar.
Getting adequate sleep, especially the night before, is vital, as you will feel anxious and risk sleeping too late, get to bed early if possible.
Be prepared, have a snack, such as any fruit or cut veg to give you energy, a protein bar, and some Acai, usually sold at competitions. Having the proper uniform lengths can be significant; many people get disqualified due to neglecting the rules, having spare spats, tops etc., incase something goes wrong on the day you'll be well prepared.
Drink plenty of water!!!
Right before competing, it's essential to have an intense workout and get yourself out of breath by running and doing some drills on the mats provided because your adrenaline is high; you want to get rid of that extra energy because once you step on those mats you will crash and unfortunately it happens to the best of us.
